Frequently asked questions

about riverside and therapy in ontario

  • Am I able to ask questions before counselling?

Yes, we offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation where we can get to know each other and you can ask any questions you may have.

  • Is direct billing to my insurance available?

Psychotherapy and M.S.W. Counselling services are covered by many extended health plans. Currently, Riverside is able to direct bill to those with coverage through Green Shield Canada, SSQ Insurance, and Empire Life. Thus, if your coverage is through any other company, you will be required to pay for your counselling session upfront. After payment, you will receive a receipt which you can then submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement, following their session. Counselling services provided by Registered Social Workers (R.S.W.) and Registered Psychotherapists can be claimed as a medical expense tax deduction when you file your income tax return. In other words, RP’s and RSW’s are now authorized as “medical practitioners” for the purpose of claiming medical expenses.

  • Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes, Riverside offers both in-person and virtual counselling sessions. This flexibility allows us to maintain consistent sessions no matter your location or schedule constraints.

The first session is mainly about getting to know each other and understanding your needs and goals. We'll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, your personal background, and your expectations. You'll also have the chance to ask any questions about the process.

  • How often should I attend sessions?

The frequency of sessions largely depends on your personal needs and circumstances. Typically, sessions are scheduled once a week, but this can be adjusted to best support your journey.

  • What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an innovative therapeutic method designed to help individuals process traumatic experiences. It involves specific protocols that can often work faster than traditional therapy methods and requires less verbal communication.

Their approach is often holistic, recognizing the impact of relationships, environment, and broader social factors on well-being. RSWs are held to rigorous standards of education, ethics, and ongoing professional development, ensuring care that is safe, compassionate, and grounded in best practices.

  • Why is being registered in Ontario important?

Seeking a therapist who is registered in Ontario ensures that you are working with a qualified professional who is accountable to a recognized regulatory body, such as the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Registration means the therapist has met established standards for education, training, and clinical competence, and is required to follow strict ethical guidelines, maintain confidentiality, and participate in ongoing professional development. It also provides an added layer of protection, as there is a formal process for addressing concerns if they arise. Ultimately, choosing a registered therapist helps ensure that the care you receive is safe, ethical, and grounded in professional standards you can trust.
